Any excuse to bake is a good one in my books, but I’ve always been partial to Valentine’s Day and its signature sweets. Adorable heart shapes, red everything, chocolate, and giving treats to friends and family in cute packages, its all about love and indulgences. I can’t help feeling nostalgic thinking about the little valentines we used to give each other in school, so I decided to make my own adult version this year.
Red velvet is the obvious choice when it comes to Valentines day, and I love the idea of these red velvet oreos. For the actual cookie part, I followed this recipe, but used my own icing. I’m actually not a fan of typical oreos, and wanted to do a cream cheese icing instead of the usual oreo cream filling. I’m a firm believer that a sweet can only be deemed ‘red velvet’ if, and only if, it’s accompanied by some sort of cream cheese icing. If you’re of the same opinion, you can follow my recipe here for classic cream cheese icing that’s not too sweet. Lastly, for the actual cookies, I would recommend adding a tablespoon or so of cocoa powder to the dough to not only deepen the red colour, but also add an incredible flavour.
You’re never to old to give and receive a sweet treat in a cute little package, so wrap them up in cellophane or pretty treat bags, and add a simple message to let someone know you care. Hopefully they share, because they are amaaaazing. Enjoy!
Wrap up this Valentines Day dessert to give to your special someone or out to closest friends. I promise, they’ll love you forever if you do.
