I don’t normally write about places we’ve stayed, as there have been so many hotels/bnbs/apartments that I couldn’t possibly do a review of them all.
But every once in awhile one accommodation stands out among the rest, and I feel obligated to sing its praises.
This year that place was Masseria Agnello Azienda Agricola Relais, an Agriturismo in Sicily. For those of you that don’t know what an Agriturismo is, it’s essentially a farm stay on a either working or converted agricultural lands. While this particular Masseria no longer had any working farm land, its agricultural history was evident throughout with its rustic charm. It was also ideally located very close to Agrigento (housing some of the world’s best preserved ancient Greek temples), and Scala dei Turchi. Masseria Agnello has everything you need for an ideal stay.
Simply put, it was perfection.
Every single detail was thought out carefully, with no corner left untouched From the moment of check-in we were cheerfully greeted by Alice, an English expat who together with her Italian husband, operate the Masseria. We were shown to our room, which was actually a private Family Villa complete with two bedrooms and a private terrace with a spectacular view. We took a quick dip in the pool before heading to the main farmhouse to join the other guests for aperitifs. After watching the sun set over Realmonte’s rolling hills, we then sat down to a simple but delicious pasta meal, followed by a nightcap.
The morning greeted us with the most spectacular views from our villa’s terrace. We took a walk around the property, and then filled up on the most spectacular breakfast spread. I then spent the rest of the early afternoon lounging in the main farmhouse’s living room, reading a book, glancing up every once in awhile to gaze out the window towards the sea. Heaven.
