Long being synonymous with the historical and stuffy classics, Vienna is hardly known as being the forefront of Europe’s trendy cultural landscape. Yet among the classical Viennese streetscapes is a lively network of wine bars (both traditional and new age), restaurants, bars, and cafes packed with young crowds, trendsetters, and hipsters, that almost makes you question if you’re actually back in Brooklyn.
I did my research to find these places, and also had the advantage of staying in a Viennese fashion & textile designer’s apartment, who gave me the low-down on the city’s best spots. The following places were all tried + tested, and passed with flying colours as unique eating experiences.
Here were our top 5 experiences that I highly recommend checking out on your next visit to Vienna:
1. For the Viennese classics with a contemporary twist:
This was one of places that was both on my “to-go” list through my own research, as well as on our local host’s favourite hotspots. The servers are dressed in white tuxes, and the old wood panelling lining the restaurant wall’s lower half is contrasted by artist Otto Zitko’s black and white doodles along every remaining surface. Skopik & Lohn serves us Austrian favourites, done oh-so-right. We loved the giant Wiener Schnitzel and the infamous black pudding, and the elderflower cocktails we to die for.
2. For a drink with an epic view:
Le Loft at Sofitel Hotel Stephansdom
The view alone is worth it. After being immediately knocked over by it, the ceiling fresco then becomes apparent (and just as shocking). With a great wine list, sit by the bar overlooking the dining room and simply take it all in.
3. For dining in a backyard oasis (with seriously good grub):
Tucked away in the Museumsquartier, this intimate oasis serves up delicious food (try the perogies!) in an amazing atmosphere. You are almost forget for a moment that you’re dining in the heart of an urban centre. The house wine and desserts are fantastic too.
4. For the Never-Ending Snack Stalls:
Besides the typical food fare found at this well-known Viennese outdoor market, there are some popular restaurants sandwiched between produce and household items vendors. You can try anything from a charcuterie and cheese board, to some seriously delicious Israeli dishes at NENI.
5. For the Gourmet Meal you cook yourself (it’s actually so easy):
Whether you’re a Viennese local looking for an easy meal solution one night, or a visitor of Vienna needing a break from eating every meal out, Feinkoch has you covered. This genius dining concept allows you to first select a dish of choice, then provides you with all the necessary ingredients in pre-measured amounts (for two), along with detailed instructions on how to prepare the dish. You then take them home with you to whip up a delicious and easy meal! We loved our meal (that was actually plenty of food for 3 people), and the opportunity to cook in our rented apartment one night without having to do a big grocery haul was ideal. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a unique dining experience!
